Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS)


The Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) is an assessment based on the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework. The three main reasons for the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) are to inform and improve curriculum and instruction, to evaluate school, student and district performance, and to determine student eligibility for a high school diploma. The Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) is administered in the following subjects, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Technology/Engineering, History and Social Science. All students must pass the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) in their tenth grade year in English and Mathematics in order to receive a diploma. The Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) performance levels are Advanced (260-280), Proficient (240-258), Needs Improvement (220-238), and Warning/Failing (200-218).
