Utah Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs)


Criterion Referenced Tests (CRT) consists of end-of-year and/or end-of-course examinations in language arts, mathematics, reading, and science, for grades k-12. Participation in these examinations is required. Student results are categorized by various levels of proficiency, and schools measure their success in part by counting how many students score at high proficiency levels on these exams. The science, social studies, math, and reading Utah Core Criterion Referenced Tests (CRTs) (before grade 9) consist of multiple-choice questions scored by computer. On each test, a scaled score of 2100 is required to pass and 2400 is required to earn "commended" status. The written composition is graded on a scale of 0-4, 0 being off topic and 4 being highly effective. The open-ended items (short answer) are graded on a scale of 0-3 (0= insufficient, 3=exemplary. Texas high school seniors cannot graduate unless they pass exit-level TAKS tests in English language arts, social studies, math, and science. During their junior and senior years of high school, students are given five chances to pass the test.
