Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL)

The state-level Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) assessments require students to both select and create answers to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and understanding in each of the Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs)--from multiple-choice and short-answer questions to more extended responses, essays, and problem solving tasks. The Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) is given in reading, communication, and mathematics includes a mix of multiple-choice, short-answer, and extended-response questions. Having a large pool of questions provides the opportunity to vary the kinds of questions from year to year so that a particular question format (e.g. multiple-choice, short-answer, or extended-response) is not always associated with the same EALRs.
